ANTISEMITISM in the URBAN VS. RURAL SOUTH
In the 1700s to the early 1800s, many Jewish people were immigrating from the more progressive north and Europe in search of economic opportunities for a better life. Prior to taking this course, I had stereotyped the southern regions as one cohesive geography with the same ideologies and the same progressive timeline on their acceptance and treatment of racial and religious groups. Now after reading numerous academic works describing the history of the South, I realize the southern South was rather a mosaic region rather than a united one.
For my final project, I have decided to explore the progressive timelines of Jewish tolerance and acceptance in the more urban southern cities such as Atlanta, New Orleans, Nashville, Memphis, compared to the rural southern regions. I have included dates from the North regions as a frame of reference for comparison. I hope you find my research as interesting as I do. Enjoy!
